Human body requires a dietary source of certain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are essential in the maintenance of vital body functions. They perform this function by converting into a hormone like substance called Prostaglandin.
Spirulina has a unique composition of essential fatty acids, the primary of it being Gamma linolenic acid (GLA). GLA is the precursor of prostaglandin that controls many functions. Other than mother’ milk spirulina is the only source of GLA.
Natural pigments Spirulina’s very dark colour comes from its high concentration of three natural colors viz- carotenoids, chlorophyll and phycocyanin that regulate vital body metabolism
Carotenoids They are the yellow orange pigments. Among the carotenoids Beta carotene needs much attention as it has pro vitamin A property. Spirulina has ten times higher concentration of beta carotene than carrot. Beta carotene in Spirulina being a natural form is converted to vitamin A only when required by the body. Phycocyanin This is the most important pigment in spirulina. This blue pigment has several important functions and research indicates it may stimulate immune system. Spirulina has a very high phycocyanin content . It is 15000 to 18000 mg / 100 gm.
Enzymes They are catalysts for chemical changes in the body. Super oxides Dismutase and Glutathione peroxidase are the most important of these enzymes present in Spirulina. They have antioxidant property and are believed to retard ageing.
Glycolipids and sulfolipids They form part of the fats in Spirulina. They are remarkably active against viral infections.
Polyamines These are molecules that give Spirulina its characteristic smell. They are responsible to keep cell membrane healthy. The polyamines are high in fresh batches of Spirulina production. They degrade as the spirulina is exposed to sunglight and excess heat.
